I sure hope the road don't come to own me

But you're so far away
Doesn't anybody stay in one place anymore
It would be so fine to see your face at my door
Doesn't help to know you're so far away

Travelin' around sure gets me down and lonely
Nothin' else to do but close my mind
I sure hope the road don't come to own m

I hide because I fear people.

I steal because I'm hungry.

the religious men...those that claim to be good?  they aren't.  I have proof of that.  Many of them have claimed that I am evil...or something like that because I cannot speak so they have tried to remove the evil.

Hot water...cold water...beatings--they've tried it all and I couldn't handle it anymore.

I stole a frock from the laundry room and stole out one night.  I had heard stories about the unknown west where people where making their own lives without worrying about what happened to them. I wanted that.

I wanted that freedom!

No one would miss me anyways.  So I found a way.

Stealing away on trains was easy.  The stage coach was harder...and then getting past the natives, that was the hardest.

and now, I'm here.

Alone.

Just like the way that I had hoped.

Most folks here are nice, they give me food and tell me where I can sleep...if I want to.  But a lot of them keep on suggesting that I need to get clean.  I don't see a reason to get clean.  Water's done nothing but hurt me.  why do I want to get in that stuff willingly?

I might be young, but I want to survive.

No one wants me but I will live.

maybe not all grown ups are as mean as I thought they were. mr. ct is really nice and he likes to make sure that I eat.

something other than blueberries.

but i like blueberries, they are easy to pick and eat.  my gloves are stained blue though--but I don't mind. it reminds me of a good place to get quick food.

though, if I'm really hungry, I'll peek in the stores and see what ones are empty and I'll take food from them.  they've got plenty of food in there.  they get nice and fat! so they won't miss a roll here and a pie there.

I got me a egg today!  can't wait to cook that one up.  it'll be breakfast for tomorrow.

I wonder what school is.  I was never allowed to get near the other kids.  everyone was afraid that the demon would go to another child from me. I guess I'm not suppose to know about this thing called school...but I bet I wouldn't do real good at it.

especially iffa people have to talk.

would be nice to talk with folks though in some way...

Awww what a sweetie. Kids can remind us of a lot of things we take for granted.

i almost got robbed yesterday.

some man came up behind me when i was in the creek panning for the shiny stones and told me to give him all of my gold.

i did the only thing i knew to do.  pretend i had none.  BUT HE BOUGHT IT!

but, it did help that some other man cam up and stopped it so i could run away.
