But you're so far away
Doesn't anybody stay in one place anymore
It would be so fine to see your face at my door
Doesn't help to know you're so far away

Travelin' around sure gets me down and lonely
Nothin' else to do but close my mind
I sure hope the road don't come to own m

Ok so I decided to delve into a role that I see very few people taking on.  The Road Agent.  However I didn't really know what to expect and or do as one, so I did some research online and at my local library with some book names I dug up on the web.

It's easy to decide that you're going to be a thief I suppose, but what I've found is that many "Road Agents" weren't as romantic as say the more famous ones such as Black Bart and Pearl Hart.  Most were either veterans of the civil war, opportunistic employees of the very wagon branches they worked for, but the majority were desperate folks who's need of wealth drove them to the only law they understood, the law of the gun.

Keeping this in mind and applying it to my Irishman Donald O'Harra, presents me with a challenge.  The first is to keep Donald as the love-able Irish Drunk that he is.  The other is to keep him from turning into a "Pure Bad Guy."  Sure the new Donald isn't the kindest soul in Deadwood, and far from it, but he's not some heartless blood thirsty monster.  He's a veteran down on his luck, and looking for a way to pay for his love of whiskey.

Thus The Irish Road Agent is born.

Now here's the real challenge... playing a Road agent on a sim that has no physical trail between Deadwood and Fort Laramie.  This leaves me wondering how can I rob folks out of their valuables, money, and gold without a safe place to do so?  Also how to save poor Donald from the noose should things go awry?

And here is where I meet a dead end.  I could rob folks outside the fort but in reality that's not the smartest thing to do...  I could rob folks in the hills... where Donald is living.  Again not so smart.  Many Road Agents of the time often robbed one or two stages and then retired.  Never so much as getting caught.  The saying went, "If you heard the Agent's name, he's not the best one around."

Also we lack a real presence of The Wells Fargo company wagons everywhere.  The Specially built, "Deadwood Stages" were basically heavily armored Stage Coaches with vaults bolted to the wagons and filled with a team of guards ferried gold between Deadwood and Nebraska, but even these were often lost to solo Road Agents on occasion.

So I have a few questions,

1. Wasn't there plans for a "Trail in the sky?" Is that still in progress or was that part  scrapped?
2.  Should I simply NPC the robberies?  Write newspaper stories about the increase in robberies for the paper?
3.  What would you suggest I do?  Can you come up with some creative way for me to act out the part of a Road Agent in this time when they were so abundant in the Black hills?

Also I've compiled enough information on Road Agents I could write a lecture, and kind of want to give it a go.  Is there someone I could talk to about that?

I know this post isn't a fully fleshed out plot, but it's the basis for my character as it stands.  I'd like to delve into this part of Deadwood, granted it could end up being very, very short.

I meself think this has great potential!   A lot of newcomers and others, I think, haven't taken the time to find out exactly what a Road Agent is!

Yes, actually robberies would be hard to often do, though you may find some willing victims to meet you just by the stagecoach up in the fort area.

Wyatt is on vacation I think, but newspaper stories would be brilliant!

Yes yes, write up some stories about the robberies, throwing in bits of that research you've done!

Regular players will also be very willing and likely to add in what they've heard or experienced -- run ins with a noobie who came for a day may turn out to be yet another story about that Road Agent with .. (err) an Irish Accent...

I don't think ya need to be doin' a lot of robberies in order to build a reputation!

True enough.

I figured I'd just wing it, do what I can.

I'd still like to give a presentation on Road Agents.  Heck I think it'd be a good idea to have classes on the history of all the roles in Deadwood.  Give history, some plot ideas, costume ideas, ect. ect.  That way people can broaden their horizons.
